Biography

Farid Elhami is a renowned Kurdish musician and one of the most influential masters of the tanbur (Tamîra) instrument. Recognized as the twentieth-generation heir of the authentic and spiritual Yarsan tanbur tradition, Elhami carries forward a legacy rooted in the greatest families of tanbur players.

Through decades of research, teaching, and performance, he has played a vital role in presenting mystical Kurdish tanbur music to international audiences. His artistry bridges heritage and innovation, making him a central figure in the global recognition of Kurdish maqam music.

Elhami is the leader and composer of the Ferdowsi Ensemble, a group dedicated to reviving ancient narratives, melodies, and maqams of the Tamîra. Their performances combine authenticity, Iranian mythology, and musical creativity, offering audiences a unique interpretation of traditional Kurdish music.

He is also the founder and director of the Tamîre Kurd Academy in Erbil, a prestigious educational and research center focused on preserving and teaching the heritage of tanbur and Kurdish maqam music. The academy has become one of the leading institutions for training professional musicians in the region.

Beyond music, Elhami is active in filmmaking, producing documentary and artistic films about Kurdish culture, music, and everyday life. His visual storytelling highlights identity, heritage, and the deep connection between people and culture, with works showcased at festivals and artistic events.
